Absalom and Achitophel

John Dryden (1631 – 1700)

The poem, which was published in 1681 during the Exclusion Crisis, is allegorical. It uses the story of Absalom’s rebellion against his father David (2 Samuel 15-19) to warn of the dangers of allowing James, Duke of York to inherit the throne ahead of Charles II’s Catholic younger brother, James, Duke of Monmouth.
