Description

J. Sheridan Le Fanu is considered to be one of the pioneers of the Gothic mystery thriller. His novel, “Uncle Silas”, is considered to be one of his best works and it has inspired countless other writers to create amazing mystery and detective stories over the next decades.

Uncle Silas is a novel set in England which focuses on a young heiress named Maud Ruthyn. She lives with her father in their quiet mansion in Derbyshire. She soon finds out that her family has a black sheep who is her uncle, Silas Ruthyn. He used to be a famous gambler, but he now resides in the spooky mansion in Bartram-Haugh. His character is surrounded in mystery and suspicions, especially when one of the people who he owed money to, dies in a peculiar suicide case right in his mansion in an apparently locked room.

Maud’s father hires Madame de la Rougierre which is to serve as both a governess and a companion to the young maid. Maud is then asked by her father is she would be willing to go through some forms of ordeals so as to help his brother Silas from a bad reputation. Maud’s father dies soon after, and his will apparently states that her daughter is to spend some time with her uncle Silas until she comes of age. Another statement in his will allows the mansion to be inherited by her uncle in case she dies as a minor.

She arrives at the mansion in Bertram-Haugh, only to be greeted by strange butlers and servants. She soon discovers a plot that would threat her own life.

“Uncle Silas” is a locked room mystery thriller that is masterfully written, with a well-crafted storyline that will delight you and keep your adrenaline levels high from beginning to the end.
