Description

Twenty Years After is one of the most popular and most appreciated novels in the D’Artagnan Romance series – chronologically, the plot of the novel comes after The Three Musketeers and before The Vicomte de Bragelonne and is set during the reign of the child Louis XIV.

Twenty Years After is considered a more mature book than its prequel. As a matter of fact, it is not only the plot that is more mature, but the principal characters as well – the four young musketeers the readers got to know and to love so much when reading the first book are now twenty years older. Each of them have their own lives and are no longer that closely related to each other and it is only the interest of France that reunites them once more. Out of the four heroes, it is D’Artagnan who has undergone the most conspicuous development. The once inexperienced soldier now takes an active role in politics and it is him who summons the others for the adventure. Times have changed a lot since the four musketeers last met and D’Artagnan is now their uncontested leader.

Reading Twenty Years After is a real same-but-very different experience. It is more demanding than its prequel; the characters are more elaborate, the conflicts are more intricate, the political plots are much more complex and readers are required to know much more about the political background of 17th century France than in the case of The Three Musketeers if they are to enjoy the book to the fullest. Even so, the adventures that these four brave soldiers take part in are not less gripping and exciting, their friendship has not weakened in the slightest and their hearts are not in the least less noble than the hearts of the four young musketeers 20 years before.
