Entire generations have grown up on Tom Swift novels since the first story appeared in 1910 and this book holds a very special, magical place in the series.

The novel starts with Tom being determined to settle down and live a quiet life, focusing on nothing else but his inventions. However, all it takes to convince him to change his mind is an article in a newspaper written by Professor Bumper about an underground Mayan city that is situated somewhere in Honduras and some persuasion by the Professor himself. What makes the city so interesting is not only its underground constructions, but also the existence of an idol made from gold.

Just like in the other stories in the series, Tom makes great use of his vast knowledge in the area of science and technology. The professor and Tom set off to find and retrieve the invaluable gold statue and they are planning to use Tom’s invention, a special device to achieve their goal.

However, their search soon becomes a dangerous mission as there seems to be another group of explorers led by a young professor called Fenimore Beecher who are also determined to find and get hold of the idol, but this only motivates Tom to keep supporting the professor, especially after he finds out that the leader of the rival team is pursuing Tom’s sweetheart, trying to lure her away from the young inventor. Tom faces all sorts of dangers, including not only conflicts with other humans, but also situations that involve huge mosquitos and alligators, but his knowledge and resourcefulness always give him the strength and the courage to solve any situation.

The end of the novel is somewhat sudden, but the reader’s journey until that ending is wonderfully entertaining, making the novel a perfect choice for readers of any age, young and more mature alike.
