Description

Tom Swift in Captivity is the thirteenth volume in Victor Appleton’s Tom Swift series – the thirteenth book in the line of over 100 adventure and science fiction novels dedicated to young readers.

This book, as all the others in the series, features Tom Swift in the role of the protagonist. Tom, famous for his inventions and his successful scientific experiments, is approached by a circus owner and commissioned to find a missing person named Jake Poddington who had been pursuing a tribe of giants in South Africa and disappeared while following the tracks of the monsters. Tom Swifts owns several airships that he could use for finding the missing man, but the airship is not the only invention he can and will use during his journey.

Tom Swift in Captivity, like all the other books in the series, goes to great length to describe scientific discoveries and technological innovations that are now part of our everyday life, but were considered magical and futuristic at the time the book was published. The plot is mainly driven by Tom Swift’s inventions, especially his inventions in the field of transportation – going into the wilderness to find Poddington would have been impossible, had it not been for Tom Swift’s airship and his extraordinary weapons.

Technology is so much at the center of all Tom Swift novels that they are sometimes called invention fiction. There are more than 100 Tom Swift novels, organized in five series. The first novel came out in 1910, with the title character created by Edward Stratemeyer. Victor Appleton, the name specified as the name of the writer is actually a pseudonym used by a number of ghost writers between 1910 and 2007 when the last novel in the series was published. The Tom Swift series has inspired the greatest science fiction writers of our times, including Isaac Asimov, Steve Wozniak and numerous others.
