Description

The Tom Swift series were a total hit at the beginning of the twentieth century, being continued due to popular demand well after Edward Stratemeyer created the first few volumes. Today, more than 100 volumes depicting the adventures of Tom Swift remain, written by a collective group of dedicated and skilled children’s literature authors known simply by the pseudonym “Victor Appleton.”

Tom Swift and His Aerial Warship is the 18th volume in the series, having been written right after the dawn of the Great War (WWI) in 1915, at a time when the authors decided to have Tom take an active stance in the war, revealing his latest invention – his brand new airship.

As Tom Swift explains some of the problem he’s been having, however, a fire erupted that was quite difficult to put out. Careful investigation revealed that the fire was set deliberately; but will this fact have any bearing on Tom’s efforts, and can he present his new invention to the US Government in time, before the plot against him and his inventions gets underway to cause any serious damage?

As always, Tom Swift combines adventure with science and inventive ideas to create an exciting storyline that children will thoroughly enjoy. While the theme has to do with the military use of Tom’s inventions, the focus remains heavily on science as the answer to all the problems – the attempt to build the most superior inventions in order to thwart the Germans, who were already using flying machines known as zeppelins at the time.

Tom’s inventions, as always, are quite different from what was available at the time, the authors using the full extent of their ingenuity and imagination to come up with sound, educationally viable and overall brilliant solutions that are still capable of entertaining children today, even a century after the story was penned.
