Thuvia, Maid of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs

The name Edgar Rice Burroughs makes everyone think of the Tarzan series, but Burroughs is well-known for his contribution to fantasy and science fiction as well. The fourth out of eleven John Carter novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs and the first that does not have Carter as its protagonist, Thuvia, Maid of Mars features Carter’s son, Carthoris, as the main hero. Young Carter makes just as great a protagonist as his father, so the fans of Burroughs’ Carter novels will not be disappointed.

The novel was first published in series in 1916, so the story and the subtext of war and violence are obviously inspired by first World War then going on in Europe. The story revolves around the kidnapping of Princess Thuvia by Prince Astok, event which, like in so many cases in history, leads to a bloody war. Carthoris sets out to free the Princess and is involved in all kinds of adventures and fights on the way. He meets and fights white monkeys, ethereal warriors – phantom fighters with bows that can still kill in the “real” world -, 10-legged lions and many others on his fantastic journey.

It is not only the story that makes Thuvia a fascinating read. The novel is written in the well-known Burroughs style, funny and free-flowing, adding even more excitement and fun. The genre is a crossover between science fiction and romantic stories, being often called planetary romance, so those readers who are looking for an action-packed story spiced with romance in a world full of alien beings and supernatural elements, all infused with heroism and a very special take on planets of our galaxy inspired by the scientific knowledge of the beginning of the 20th century, Thuvia, Maid of Mars is beyond doubt an exciting and excellent choice.
