This World Is Taboo by Murray Leinster

If you are a fan of alternate history and science fictions, you will surely love Murray Leinster’s This World is Taboo – if you are not yet a fan and you read this great book, you will surely be converted into a fan right away.

The book was published in 1960 under the original title Pariah Planet and it is one of Leinster’s Med Service stories. Though its critical reception was not very favorable, it has gained the recognition of sci-fi fans from all over the world due to its masterful plot that mixes action, the archetypal fight between good and evil and romance.

The protagonist of the story, Calhoun, works for the Interstellar Medical Service. His services are requested on Dara, a forbidden land. He breaks the quarantine instated on Dara and is therefore considered to be infected with the blueskin plague. He is sentenced to what any plague carrier would be sentenced to: being shot right on site. Well, evidently he was not shot in the end – otherwise this exciting, eventful story full of turns, action and love would not exist. After Calhoun escapes getting shot by his own men, he finds that the dwellers of Dara are also intent on killing him and that is where it all begins.

Murray is known as one of the greatest innovators of the genre of science fiction and the author who invented alternate history stories. This book is a special example not only of Murray’s writing talent, but also of his criticism of an economic attitude driven by fear – Calhoun’s people would not trade their surplus food to the Darans because of their irrational fear of the plague, and they even plan to nuke Dara – so, the reader will be surely in for a treat.
