Best known for the satirical novel entitled The Way We Live Now, Anthony Trollope wrote several novels and series of novels that went on to encompass the prestigious body of work for which he remained a valued author for the next 150 years. Like in the case of most Victorian novelists, Trollope’s talent does not lie in sensationalism, but in creating authentic stories and situations involving life lessons that could actually occur in everyday life. The only difference that sets him apart as an outstanding writer is that the British author is capable of creating genuine, realistic characters whose everyday challenges can be related to even today.

The Warden is a pleasant, gentle-paced story that will delight you while remaining a thought-provoking tale involving Mr Septimus Harding, the warden of Hiram’s Hospital and a kindhearted, noble character who isn’t afraid to stand up for what he believes.

When John Bold, a zealous reformer who seeks to expose the disparity between the income obtained by the charity’s beadsmen and the allegedly high amounts used by Mr. Harding to secure an abode and living for himself and his unmarried daughter, Eleanor. Despite Bold’s romantic involvement with Eleanor, he goes on to start a lawsuit against Mr. Harding, and even attempts to use the press in order to discredit him.

First among the six novels Trollope wrote as part of the Chronicles of Bersetshire series, The Warden remains known as a novel filled with fascinating characters that people can easily relate to. According to some records, Trollope’s story was inspired by the real life case of inquiries made by a Winchester vicar and Church reformer into the financial affairs of Francis North, 5th Earl of Guilford.

The novel became quite popular in the 1980s, when it was adapted into a short BBC television series bearing the same name.
