Description

The Valley of Silent Men is an action-adventure novel by James Oliver Curwood, one of the masters of the genre at the beginning of the 20th century.

The book takes the reader to the North Canadian wilderness and introduces tough and at the same time noble-hearted characters. The novel is essentially a romance – the protagonist falls in love with a mysterious woman, a secretive, but brave and sweet lady with beautiful hair. The man follows the lady of his heart through all sorts of adventures undertaken in order to fulfill a dangerous plan proposed by the lady. The two go through a lot together and there are lots of moving and romantic events, even some drama, but everything turns out for the best in the end, as one can expect of a romantic adventure story.

The Valley of Silent Men is based on Curwood’s own experiences in the Canadian North. By 1909 he managed to save enough money to embark on a long journey to the Canadian wilderness, a trip that was adventurous and provided inspiration for many of Curwood’s stories. Influenced by the writing of Jack London, Curwood mixes adventure and deep emotions in his novels and he often uses animal characters as protagonists.

This novel of his was highly appreciated by the audience and the critics as well and not only in the U. S., but in Canada and in the United Kingdom as well. His work – his novels and short stories just as much as his articles – was translated to Italian, Polish, French, Swedish, Russian and Dutch and was also published in those countries, bringing the author even more appreciation and financial success.

Curwood’s work inspired almost twenty movies, some of them, such as his story entitled Wapi, the Walrus, being adapted to film several times, while others, such as his novel entitled The Wolf Hunters being made into films featuring Hollywood superstars including John Wayne.
