The novel is a true product of the 1950’s and 1960’s. It is as colorful and as packed with action as any of Andre Norton’s novels. According to the novel, the technology needed for travelling backwards through time is governed by laws of physics that are radically different from the laws of physics as we know them, so the reader has the pleasure of reading lengthy, yet never too lengthy scientific discussions. The action takes place on several different time levels, moving quickly back and forth between our age and pre-historic eras. The hero, Ross Murdock, is a crook and a very tough man, the kind of guy who can undertake such a difficult journey and solve the problems thrown his way in his characteristic, non-conformist manner.

The book was published several times after it was written in 1958. In 2000, Norton herself decided to update the text and she has made three important changes, setting the story in the first quarter of the 21st century, replacing the Reds with the Russians and rendering space travel infeasible and ridiculous.
