Description
First published in the magazine Astounding Science Fiction in 1959, That Sweet Little Old Lady is among the best science fiction stories of all times. Unexpected twists, exciting chases and fighting against a telepathic spy are all given to the reader in the characteristic Garrett style, with lots of humor, making the book a really fast read. The story is centered around the FBI’s attempts to track down a telepathic spy. The FBI agent is faced with a problem right from the beginning: how to catch a spy that enters and exits other people’s minds the way he wants. Fortunately, the FBI has a helper: a strange, slightly crazed old lady who believes she is the Queen.Garrett’s story enjoyed great popularity among science fiction fans right when it was first published. Action-packed, full of wonderfully elaborated details and strangely interesting characters such as patients in mental institutions and hilariously funny all the way, the novella is certainly one to read from cover to cover in one go. The story might seem to make for a light read, but the way it is presented and the phenomenon it revolves around – telepathy – raises deep philosophical questions, too: where would the ability to read mind get humanity to? Would it not lead to insanity? That Sweet Little Old Lady was expanded in conjunction with Laurence Janifer and published in the form of a book in 1962 under the title Brain Twister, as part of the author’s Psi-Power series. The novella brought the author appreciation not only among fans of science fiction literature – it also brought him the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1960. The series includes two sequels to the novella, The Impossibles and Supermind, both offering the reader the same fun and excitement as That Sweet Little Old Lady.
