The Shadow of the Rope – An Exciting Mystery Novel You Have to Read

Known mainly as the author of the Raffles stories, Earnest W. Hornung was an excellent author, even if he was somewhat less known when compared to his contemporaries. The Shadow of the Rope is a more mysterious, difficult to grasp work of literary art that combines the exceptional writing qualities belonging to Hornung, with a set of excellent characters and unexpected plot twists, to deliver a remarkable book that can still be engaged with great enthusiasm by readers today.

In the story, a Mrs. Rachel Minchin is tried and later acquitted of the accusations of murdering her husband. Upon being released, alone and with a terrible reputation – since no one believes that she is truly innocent – Rachel has no choice but to accept the marriage proposal of an unusual gentleman she had only vaguely recalled from the trial. His name was Mr. James Buchanan Steel.

After marrying her abroad, Steel returns with his new wife, and she gradually begins to learn more about him – in most cases, quite disturbing facts – while trying somewhat unsuccessfully to keep her past hidden from her neighbors. Curiously enough, no one really investigated her late husband’s murder until much later on, and a young writer who ends up falling in love with Rachel vows to clear her name once and for all.

Not many are aware of the fact that the author, Earnest William Hornung, is actually the brother-in-law of a much more popular author by the name of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Some even consider Hornung a superior writer to Conan Doyle, arguing that without his prolific character, Sherlock Holmes, Doyle would have long since fallen into anonymity.
