The readers who love Jane Austen will surely love this book by Emily Eden – no wonder there is so much similarity, considering Jane Austen was admittedly Eden’s favorite writer. Written by a true-born aristocrat – Emily Eden was the daughter of Lord Auckland – the book formulates mildly-put criticism of the layer of society she is so familiar with, while also being concerned with problems of marriage and love. The book comprises not one, but two novels, The Semi-Detached House and The Semi-Attached Couple, both portraying Victorian England with its toned down fashion, mannerisms, true-blood aristocrats and social climbers.

The story of The Semi Detached House revolves around two sisters, Blanche and Aileen, who rent a semi-detached house in the neighborhood of the Hopkinsons. Blanche is married, but her husband, Arthur, is away in a mission, so the ladies are on their own, making friends with their neighbors and getting into all sorts of adventures.

The second book, The Semi-Attached Couple, extends and continues the Jane Austen tradition by taking up the story exactly where Austen usually leaves it off: life after the wedding ceremony. Helen, the protagonist, marries Lord Teviot, a gentleman very much in love with his new wife. However, Helen suddenly realizes that married life is more difficult than she imagined – she feels homesick and depressed. Most part of the story is about the attempts by the young husband at courting his new wife, but there are lots of unexpected turns in it, too, making the novel much more than simply the account of this courtship.

The Semi-Detached House by Emily Eden is an absolutely delightful read. The style is elegant and charming, the stories are spiced with humor and satire and they are exciting from the beginning to the end, captivating the attention of any reader, young or old, romantic or down to earth, from the first word to the last.
