Description

No one could have expected the formal ball at The Evergreens to be anything but a smooth, enjoyable party that all those invited would merrily take part in. When a valuable ruby becomes lost during the show that was displayed before the ball, however, it seems like the catastrophe could lead to a scandal. Although it is uncertain who has the jewel, a detective is soon called to help sort matters out. But can it even be found without the disturbance ruining a perfectly good evening?/br>
Anne Katharine Green was inspired in many of her works by the styles of Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Slayers, and this short tale of mystery is no exception. The Ruby and the Cauldron features a suspenseful line of events, unexpected twists and complex characters that you can never really be sure of before the author has her last say on the matter.

The story evolves progressively, and despite the fact that there are no messy murders or violence, you’ll find it can still be extremely entertaining, especially with the impending scandal looming in the air and the potential smearing of many priceless reputations.

This short tale of conflict and mystery is a textbook example on how to handle a delicate situation with tact and cleverness. Even though there doesn’t seem to be much of a chance that the culprit be someone unexpected, the ending will definitely surprise you, and Green’s remarkably subtle ability to guide the plot toward a most surprising conclusion will be worth every second of the read.

From deep intrigues waiting to be dug up and dissected, to the great character development – especially considering the shorter than average length of the book – The Ruby and the Cauldron will not fail to bring you a surprising amount of enjoyment, suspense and tasteful, thought-provoking mystery from cover to cover.
