Description

Edward J. Ruppelt is probably most known for having invented the term “unidentified flying objects” to be used instead of the “flying saucer” – a term much less scientific and much more confusing.

Ruppelt was a U.S. Air-force officer, so he knew what was going on in the sky more than anyone else. While a member of the air-force, Ruppelt worked on a number of projects that proposed to catalog UFO sightings. He left the army in 1953 to work in the area of civil engineering, but he did not give up his interest in UFOs and wrote The Report on Unidentified Flying Objects in 1956.

Even today, more than half a decade after it was written, the book is considered to be one of the most thorough and most detailed accounts of UFO sightings as well as of the government’s views and manner of handling these sightings. Being scientifically-minded and skeptical, Ruppelt does not provide any explanation or definition for what UFOs are or might be – he only provides an inventory of events that involved sightings of flying objects that were not identified. The Report was a work in progress for Ruppelt for long years – in 1960 he published a second, enlarged version of the book that included three new chapters in which he expresses much more criticism toward the UFO phenomena than he did in the first book.

The book describes a lot of facts, but it never becomes dry. Ruppelt was not only a high-ranking officer, but a talented writer as well and he included lots of anecdotes and accounts of funny incidents from the life of pilots in his book, so if you are a UFO fan or you are looking for a detailed account of UFO sightings by someone who might have had first-hand experiences in the field, The Report on Unidentified Flying Objects by Edward J. Ruppelt is certainly a must-read.
