The Repairman – Troubleshooting The Problems Of The Galaxy With A Smile

Harry Harrison is regarded as one of the great writers of the science fiction genre. He is special in that he combined not so complex science fiction with cultural encounters while also adding a humorous side to every story. In his story The Repairman, he depicts a man send somewhere in the far corners of the galaxy to troubleshoot a problem only to find himself deep into troubles.

The Repairman is a likeable character who does what he knows best – and that’s repairing stuff spread throughout the galaxy. He eagerly awaits any mission to send him fixing a beacon or a communications satellite until someone summons him up for a new mission. He is about to be sent far away on a distant solar system to repair a beacon that the Repairman has no idea about. Worse still, the Repairman has never heard of the beacon’s model despite having worked with just about any model the Galaxy has created in the past two decades. Only after checking the specs in a huge database does the Repairman find out that it is one of the oldest beacons ever created.

He eventually sets off for the distant planet only to find out that the beacon really is one of the oldest models. That wouldn’t have been a problem if the beacon hadn’t been the center of a ritual be local sentient beings. So now the Repairman has to find a way to fix the beacon without affecting the planet’s inhabitants while also making sure he escapes with his life.

This novel is one of Harry Harryson’s best works, combining several genres into a unique blend. The Repairman is a thrilling adventure filled with witty humor as well as spicy technological stuff that science fiction fans will certainly adore.
