Description

The Rayner-Slade Amalgamation by the well-known murder mystery novel writer J. S. Fletcher presents the investigation of an apparently sudden death that takes a lot of unexpected turns, people from totally opposed strata of the society being involved in it.

It all begins with a telegram Marshall Allerdyke, the protagonist, receives from his cousin James, asking him to come to the latter’s hotel in order to discuss important matters. Knowing his cousin very well, Allerdyke hurries to meet him, but, to his great surprise and horror, upon his arrival, he discovers that James was dead.

Knowing that his cousin was in perfect health, the hero decides to find out more about the circumstances that led to the unfortunate event. His suspicions are confirmed by the two doctors who examine the body, both of them declaring the ingestion of a poisonous substance as the main cause of James Allerdyke’s death.

Together with the police detective Chilverton, Marshall initiates an investigation and soon discovers that, in spite of being very close to his cousin, he knew very little about him. His relative seems to be the victim of a jewelry thieves network, having been somehow connected to Princess Nastisevitch, a member of the Russian aristocracy whose jewels of an inestimable value are missing.

The situation becomes even more complicated when a French young woman, Lisette Beaurepair, who worked as a chambermaid for the princess, and a German valet by the name of Ebers are also found dead. On the other hand, Chilverton and Allerdyke get a lot of help from where they expected the least, and the latter also has the chance to encounter the woman of his dreams…
