Description

One of the prominent faces of socialist non-fictional literature in the late1800s and the beginning of the 20th century, Upton Sinclair has had a long history of taking on and exposing corruption. Through The Profits of Religion, he aims to uncover some ofthe major mistakes made and problems caused by organized Christian religions throughout the ages, with particular focus on attacks on the often unforgivable political decisions taken by the Catholic and Anglican church around the early 1900s.

Among the most significant subjects Sinclair focuses on is the Church’s involvement in WWI. Before the beginning of the war, the Catholic Church has focused more on profit and maintaining a positive image – for instance, by patching the wounds of workers who were on strike without addressing the actual, real problems that have caused them to go on strike in the first place.

Sinclair is also quite particularly passionate when writing about the role that the Church played in leading England to a lack of preparedness before the start of the World War.

Although less known, the more pressing crimes of various organized and unorganized religions (including Mormonism, Protestantism and New Thought) are revealed in striking detail by Sinclair’s piercing words, often being quite difficult to believe overall, but also backed up by consistent arguments.

Upton Sinclair has written more than 80 books, and has presented a strong emphasis on the importance of social and industrial development, even using the royalties gained from The Jungle – one of his most influential books – to found a significant cooperative living-venture.

You’ll find the Profits of Religion to be one of the more eye-opening works of non-fiction you may have held in your hands, and the book will most definitely touch upon some challenging and shocking topics that you may never have thought about in the past.
