Edith Nesbit is an English writer that has gained the love and admiration of children throughout the world with her marvelous fantasy novels. “The Phoenix and the Carpet” is the second novel in the trilogy which has the five English children as main characters.

The story takes place mostly in London, England during the reign of Edward VII. The novel is the second and follows the action of Five Children and is a prequel to The Story of the Amulet.

The five children, Cyril, Anthea, Robert, Jane and Lamb are still in their home with their parents. The children are being bought a second-hand carpet after the first one is destroyed in an accidental fire in the nursery. Shortly before November the 5th when the Guy Fawkes Day is celebrated, the children cannot wait any longer and they light the fireworks saved for the upcoming event. The carpet catches fire, but little do the children know that on the carpet also lay a Phoenix egg. The egg falls in the fire as well as a Phoenix is born. The Phoenix tells the children that the carpet is magical and that it can grant up to three wishes per day.

The five children then start adventuring and visiting exotic places, and one time even the toddler Lamb is smuggled by the carpet which is actually caused by his wish to spend some time with his mother. The Phoenix also takes care of the children in their adventures despite not treating them equally. The magical bird is also intent on visiting the Phoenix Fire Insurance Company believing to be a temple worshipping it only to barely escape the trouble.

“The Phoenix and the Carpet” is a beautiful and sincere novel that won’t just delight the young minds, but appeal to the mature audience as well.
