Description

There are many literary experts who would consider Charles Dickens to be an author who would still be held in the highest regard even if he lived and wrote his stories and novels today. The Old Curiosity Shop is one of the best examples of Dickens’ depiction of Victorian London, this long, yet extremely engaging and in many ways both dramatic and entertaining tale, featuring complex, highly believable characters, an unexpected and well-orchestrated plot and a meaningful, deep message that you can only pick up from a genuine Charles Dickens novel.

The book tells the tale of Nell, a beautiful young girl living with her maternal grandfather who, in his naive effort to try and win a fortune to overcome the pair’s financial misfortune and save their curiosity shop from ruin, engages in gambling. However, instead of winning any amount, he ends up deep in debt until Daniel Quilp, the malicious and deformed lender that Nell’s grandfather owed money to, seizes their shop and forces the two to leave.

The two are now faced with innumerable dangers, and it is up to Nell to take her grandfather to safety, but only at the expense of her own health. Sadly, the two have not seen the last of Quilp, who now teams up with Nell’s older brother and Dick Swiveller, her would-be suitor, both of them convinced that Nell and her grandfather have a secret fortune stashed away.

Adventure and misfortune, as well as resilience, a thirst for life and a strong desire for well-being are at the core of this remarkable novel written by Charles Dickens at the height of his literary career. The Old Curiosity shop will undoubtedly enchant and inspire you through its story’s dramatic build-up and powerful intrigue, leading to an ending typical of Dickens’ literary genius and ability to touch his readers’ hearts.
