Description
The Mystery of the Yellow Room is the first of Gaston Leroux’s novels, having the young reporter Joseph Rouletabille as a protagonist, belongs to the so-called “locked room mystery” category, being considered as one of the best literary productions of the genre. It all begins when Miss Mathilde Stangerson, the daughter of a reputed scientist, professor Joseph Stangerson, is found severely beaten in a room closely located to the laboratory where her father conducts his experiments. What makes the case even more difficult to solve is the fact that the room where the aggression took place is found locked from the inside.Joseph Rouletabille, a young reporter who is also attracted by apparently impossible to solve police cases and who uses investigation methods that are a little bit unusual, is called by the victim’s father to help and, accompanied by his good friend Sainclair, a lawyer, goes to Chateau du Glandier, Stangersons’ residence. One of the best police detectives in France, Frederic Larsan, is also there, a friendly competition beginning between him and Rouletabille.Apparently, all the evidences indicate Robert Darzac, the most trusted collaborator of professor Stangerson, and also Mathilde’s fiancé, as being the author of the aggression. However, as Larsan ardently supports this theory, Rouletabille is not so convinced, suspecting that something more hides behind the case. When Jacques, the gamekeeper, is murdered, the police detective arrests Darzac, charging him with both crimes. Although he risks to be sentenced to death, the latter does not make any efforts to defend himself, remaining silent to all accusations, so it is now up to Rouletabille to solve the mystery and reveal the true identity of the criminal. “This foot,” he cried, “will make a great headline.”
