Description

After her husband, Sir Richard Trevlyn, died under mysterious circumstances as he received news on a secret matter from a stranger, his widow and daughter are entirely baffled. What could have been so ominous as to cause the man’s sudden demise? Perhaps the boy who makes his way into their lives may be able to shed some light on the matter, but at least at first, he only manages to further cloud the mystery.

Strange proceedings and fatal legacies dominate this intriguing story written by Louisa May Alcott, and even though the author’s ability to captivate and entrance her readers doesn’t compete with some of her more well-known works, The Mysterious Key and What It Opened is still considered to be an interesting and welcome change from the Little Women series that Alcott is most known for.

A fairly notable shift from the writing style she usually employs, the story is able to attract your interest with an almost magnetic force, causing readers throughout the past 150 years to just keep on it to the very end. The mysteries that the book presents seem like illusive shadows, and events are unfolding in such a way that the plot is constantly two steps ahead, so you’ll never feel like you’re reading something predictable or uneventful.

The book feels like it’s actually dragging the suspense on to the very last few chapters, however, the subtle unfolding of events and their seeming slowness – as it takes more than twelve years for any hope to arise that the mystery of Sir Richard’s death can be solved.

For a short, insightful and entertaining read that will challenge your thinking and cause you to go deeper reading between the lines than in most similar stories you may have read, The Mysterious Key and What It Opened may offer the ideal reading experience for you.
