The story follows a similar path to many of the other Oz books, however, this time Dorothy and her friends have to face the evil Ugu the Shoemaker and the many obstacles he places in their path.

Friendship and compassion endures as in many of the other Baum novels; however, the lessons and plot twists included in the Lost Princess of Oz are quite unique in their ingenuity and elegance.

The Lost Princess of Oz was dedicated by Baum to the daughter of his youngest son, Kenneth Gage Baum.
