Description

Published in 1898, “The Lost City”, written by Joseph E. Badger, Jr. is a fantastic tale involving jungle adventures and mystery, which makes it a predecessor of many modern adventure movies and books. In other words, this book is the original story about jungles, dangerous animals, fantastic encounters, Indians and mysterious gods, the one that led to many legends and stories renowned today.

Joseph E. Badger, Jr. was a US writer who, in 1870, started to publish Dime Novels to different journals, mostly under his own name, but also under the pseudonym Harry Hazard; “The Lost City” is one of these novels, which became one of his most well-known writings.

The story is about the eccentric professor Phaeton Featherwit and two orphaned brothers who live with him. One day, while trying to investigate a tornado using one of the professor’s airships, they are sucked into it and find themselves in the middle of nowhere, in a strange uncharted land, where they discover a lost Aztec city. That sounds great, doesn’t it? However, the only problem is that the Aztecs did not want to be discovered, so everything soon becomes a matter of life and death and the characters must survive this exhilarating adventure.

Bravery and danger, venturing through this terra incognita, populated by lost tribes, underground rivers, hollow mountains, lost explorers and friendly strangers that save the day – all these form that kind of fiction that kids and young adults used to grow up on.

The book is divided into 32 chapters and the storytelling is great – simple words, easy to be understood, but full of knowledge and good reference for the readers. The author uses some words that may seem offensive today, such as “heathens” or “red skins” to discuss the Aztecs, but there was nothing unusual about it in the era, so they should be read contextually.
