Description

When you combine a comedy with a romance and a thriller, then you have no idea what to expect. Things can get so mixed up that few authors can handle so many genres. Fortunately, Wodehouse does a great job at combining these writing styles into a unique book about kidnapping, selfishness and the humorous misunderstandings between the American and English cultures.

The plot revolves around a spoilt child named Ogden Ford. His parents are extremely wealthy, and so he often becomes the subject of countless kidnapping plots, as his ransom value is immense. Ogden is an egotistical, crude and obnoxious 14 year old child who is loved all the same by his parents. After numerous American thugs try to kidnap him, his father decides to send him to a boarding school in England to protect him.

The tutor of the boarding school is one named Peter Burns, who has lost his true love and is now pressured to kidnap Ogden by his fiancé. The comic aspects of the book are related to the various schemes and plots to kidnap Ogden as well as Burns’ actions in an effort to both please his other half while trying to do the right thing.

Wodehouse successfully captures both the vices of people and the misunderstandings that arise between American and English counterparts. The plot is a mix of humorous situations and dialogue mixed with countless intrigues while also following the hero Peter Burns as he unexpectedly finds himself battling between his lost love, his fiancé and the endless schemes to kidnap Ogden. Readers who enjoy English tongue-in-cheek humor will find this book extremely entertaining, as Wodehouse manages to mix humor, thriller and romance into an intelligent novel about society and conflict of interests.
