Lloyd Eshback’s story takes place on an Earth that obliviously awaits a strange attack the likes of which no one had ever seen before. As the curious scientists, the press and the people came to observe the object, a brilliant light appeared spreading death and destruction.

Although this fascinating tale has been well-received particularly because of Eshback’s skills as a highly imaginative writer and outstanding storyteller, the idea behind it is not a completely original one. Inspired by H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds, the book follows the story of possibly one of the only survivors of Earth, once a strange alien attack threatens the planet and our civilization.

The story, however, has its own unique characters and plot twists that give it an even greater dimension than Wells’ well-known novel. An underrated work of literary brilliance, The Gray Plague isn’t for the fainthearted. Phillip is the Venusians’ “guinea pig,” as they endeavor to use him as a test subject, prior to their full-scale attack. His resolve to escape, upon learning their plans, however, turns The Gray Plague into an exciting story of sci-fi adventure that not many authors could display so masterfully. Eshback manages to create a universe that completely envelops his readers, keeping them at the edge of their seats, as they are presented with Phillip’s seemingly futile attempts at thwarting the plans of an advanced race bent on attacking and conquering our planet.

Even though it’s quite short, the story has had a powerful impact on younger readers at the time of its first publication. Still remaining a timeless piece of science fiction literature today, you’ll find it can completely take you in, leading your imagination to places that will seem as real as can be.
