Description

A charming collection of children tales, The Golden Goose Book by L. Leslie Brooke provides excellent entertainment for young kids and the possibility for parents to spend quality time with their children, reading the tales aloud to them.

The tales feature well-known characters, such as the three little pigs and Tom Thumb, but the stories are told in an inventive way, always including unexpected twists and turns. The title story is about Simpleton, the youngest of three brothers who is sent to the forest to chop wood after his two elder brothers failed to carry out the task and were also injured because they refused to help out a little old man in the forest.

Simpleton shares his food with the man and is rewarded for his generosity with a golden goose. On his way home with the goose, the golden animal is touched by several people who try to pluck one of its golden feathers, but they all become stuck to the goose and are dragged by Simpleton behind him as he tries to get home. The procession passes by the King’s castle andis seen by the Princess who has never laughed before. She is immensely cheered by the sight and she laughs until her eyes fill with tears.

Two of the other stories in the book feature anthropomorphic representations of animals, namely the three little pigs and the three bears, while the last story is about Tom Thumb, the tiny, mischievous boy who gets into all sorts of adventures, including getting baked into a pudding, being carried by a raven and suffering the consequences of using enchanted objects.

The Golden Goose Book is a picture book, the skillful watercolor and pen illustrations by Brooke bringing the classic stories presented in vivid and entertaining style even closer to young audience and to any reader who likes fairy tales.
