Description

Best known for his humorous poem “The Songs of a Sentimental Bloke”, Clarence Michael James Stanlius Dennis, or C. J. Dennis, has written countless other works which have only recently gained recognition from the literary critics.

The Glugs of Glosh was written and published in 1917, at a time when Dennis was one of the most prosperous poets in Australian history. He had managed to sell his earlier work “The Songs of a Sentimental Bloke” in over 65,000 copies in the first year alone.

Success followed with The Glugs Of Glosh, a work that is seen today as highly critical of Australian society and society in general. The poems describe the life of ordinary people in the City of Gosh, as well as the quest for Glug.

The Quest for Glug is a seemingly pointless adventure only a Gosh from the City of Gosh would embark on. Readers are warned at the beginning of the book that anyone meeting a Gosh should take extra precautionary measures. Apparently, the advice is taken from an Old Gosh poem as well, where the advice consists of taking three hardy hairs from a rabbit rug, blowing two of them to the south and west, burning the 3rd one and then swallowing the remains. However, the advice seems pointless, as the encountered Gosh will climb a tree, and he would then need to have his toes tickled in the hope that the reader won’t “come to blows”.

A satirical work exploring nonsense politics, megalomania, hypocrisy and so-called social issues, The Glugs of Gosh is an important poem which should be taken with a large grain of salt. And for those wishing to embark on the Quest for Glug, they should be weary of the road, lest they come to blows with someone from Gosh, if they don’t have the three rabbit hairs with them.
