The Girl Who Had Nothing is about an abandoned little girl who begs herself on the pity of an aged woman. She managed to survive on her own, good thing she possesses great intelligence and talent.

The young orphan girl is known to be Joan Carthew who was left by her mother to a strict woman who owns a boarding house in Brighton. Her mother was not able to return and Joan has no money left, she decided to become a housekeeper in the boarding house. When she finally cannot endure all the hardships and pains, she goes somewhere to fulfill her dreams of being wealthy and establishing her own name and she encounters unexpected scenes along her way.

After several years, she attempted in becoming a good old-fashion heiress but failed at it. Still, Joan tries her luck at insider trading, blackmail, and selling state secrets which were all successful.

Most of her works were written also with her husband, C. N. Williamson. Many of their books include the early times of driving and can be considered as travelogues. She used pseudonyms such as A. M. Williamson, Mrs. C. N. Williamson, and Alice Stuyvesant.
