The Getting of Wisdom is a story by Australian writer Henry Handel Richardson. It was first issued in 1910, and has often been in release since then.

Henry Handel Richardson was the pen name of Ethel Florence Lindesay Richardson, a novelist to an equitably fortunate family which then experienced financial difficulties. The novelist’s family moved in different Victorian villages and when he was 13 to 17 years old, Henry enrolled in a boarding school at the Presbyterian Ladies’ College in Melbourne, Victoria. It’s this life story that nurtures straight into The Getting of Wisdom.

Laura Tweedle Rambotham, the lovely heroine, is the oldest daughter of a provincial family. She is an intelligent and most illustrative child, provided to writing tales of love for the enjoyment of her younger brothers and sisters, and a dedicated reader. She is also both honored and delicate and her mother somewhat realizes that she is not simple to deal with. Her mother is the widow of a lawyer who sustains her family in discreet destitute on her income from embroidery. When Laura was 12 years old, she attended the boarding school in Melbourne. Her life experiences at school alarm and disgrace the inexperienced Laura. The ladies at the school are commonly from rich families and those, alike with Laura, who were from impoverished situations were taught very early not to reveal their statuses for fright of mockery. Over time Laura slips small pieces of information of her family, and she got hurt for such.

Ethel Florence Lindesay Richardson, called by her pseudonym Henry Handel Richardson, was an Australian novelist.

She was born in East Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, into a fortunate family that eventually became destitute, Ethel Florence who chose to respond to Et, Ettie or Etta, was the older daughter of Walter Lindesay Richardson MD and his wife Mary Bailey.
