Description

If you’re looking for a novel that has the action, has the mystery, has the romance and with some extra bizarre events such as wrapped up mummies and other peculiarities added into the mix, then Mary Hastings Bradley’s The Fortieth Door is just the book you want to read.

Bradley was born in the 19th century in Chicago, US. After graduating from university with a degree in English literature, she seemed at a loss since she had no idea what to do next. Fortunately for her, she would start traveling and being inspired by her adventures, she would start to write novels which became successful during their age.

A few years into the 20th century, Mary was invited by her cousin to go explore Egypt. She was delighted by the idea and she went adventuring in the ancient country. Having found her inspiration, she wrote her 4th novel, The Fortieth Door, which would prove to be an immense hit.

The novel focuses on an intrepid adventurer called Jack Ryder. He is an archeologist by trade, but after having met the lovely Turkish girl Aimee, he becomes enamored by her and he ends up tangled in a mysterious journey.

The two meet at a ball where Ryder initially had refused to go. His friend insists that he go and get rid of his boring occupation and dull life for a change, and he eventually stumbled upon Aimee. While the two fall in love with each other, she is reluctant since she is Muslim and her family would probably not agree to have them two married. She ends up being kidnaped, and Ryder must go to her rescue, being dragged through crypts filled with wrapped mummies and facing many villains out to get him.

The Fortieth Door is a truly exciting novel that, while having some politically incorrect themes characteristic at that time, will certainly keep you intrigued and reading further.
