Description

The Faith of Our Fathers: a Plain Exposition and Vindication of the Church Founded by Our Lord Jesus Christ is a narrative written by archbishop James Gibbons which was printed in Baltimore in 1876, which turned into a successful adaptation reference in the United States and by 1980 was in its 111th publication.

In his 1917 preface to the 83rd edition, the Cardinal remarked that “since the first edition appeared, in 1876 up to the present time, fourteen hundred thousand copies have been published and the circulation of the book is constantly increasing. The work has been translated into nearly all the languages of Europe.” The renowned agnostic, literary critic and associate Baltimorean H. L. Mencken wrote, in his study of religion Treatise on the Gods, that “the best exposition of Catholic doctrine is probably The Faith of our Fathers’, by the late Cardinal Gibbons.”

James Gibbons was an American Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. He was an Apostolic Vicar of North Carolina from 1868 to 1872, Bishop of Richmond, Virginia, from 1872 to 1877, and as ninth Archbishop of Baltimore, Maryland, from 1877 up to his death in 1921. James Gibbons was furthered to the cardinalate in 1886.

He was sanctified a bishop in 1868 at an early age of 34 and became the first Apostolic Vicar of North Carolina. He appeared at the First Vatican Council, where he voted in approval of delineating the dogma of papal rectitude. In 1872, he was appointed as Bishop of Richmond by Pope Pius IX. In 1877, James was designated Archbishop of Baltimore, the highest apostolic see in the United States. In his 44 years as Baltimore’s archbishop, James was among the highly distinguished Catholic notables in the country. He supported labor rights, and helped encourage Pope Leo XIII to give his accord to labor unifications.
