Description

The Expressman and the Detective is Allan Pinkerton’s first try at writing his own personal experiences into a book. Though most of his works which are ascribed to Pinkerton are believed to have been put into ghostwriting, this is the context of the man the London Times calls “a man at once deeply admirable and quite obnoxious.”

Allan J. Pinkerton was a Scottish American detective and spy, best known for establishing the Pinkerton National Detective Agency.

Allan Pinkerton was born in Gorbals, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, United Kingdom, to his parents William Pinkerton and Isobel McQueen Pinkerton. He did not proceed studying at a tender age of 10 when his father died. Instead, he self-taught himself and studied eagerly. Pinkerton was among the members of the British Chartist movement as a young man. He married Joan Carfrae, a singer, in Glasgow and they subsequently moved to the United States.

Pinkerton first wanted to become a criminal detective while walking through the wooded groves in the Dundee, searching for trees to make barrel staves, when he saw a band of counterfeiters, of whom might have been associated with the wanted Banditti of the Prairie. After spying on them for a long time he contacted the local sheriff, and finally arrested them. This made Pinkerton appointed as the first police detective in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. He was partnered with Chicago lawyer Edward Rucker in creating the North-Western Police Agency, which gradually became Pinkerton & Co, and lastly Pinkerton National Detective Agency, still remaining at present as Pinkerton Consulting and Investigations, a subsidiary of Securitas AB. Pinkerton’s business insignia is a big open eye with the caption “We never sleep.”

He is also notable for his works such as Claude Melnotte As A Detective, And Other Stories, The Somnambulist and the Detective, The Murderer and the Fortune Teller, many others.
