Description

The Exploits of Elaine was adapted into a 1914 American film series, The Perils of Pauline, telling about a young woman who is in need of a man’s help.

It is a story of a young lady, Elaine who is in search of a man who is only known as The Clutching Hand, who killed her father. She seeks help from a detective to find the murderer. The Clutching Hand was the first enigmatic scoundrel who revealed himself in a movie series. The idea was largely applied for the rest of the schematic subsistence.

The Exploits of Elaine was founded on a serial book, Craig Kennedy, Scientific Detective, by Arthur B. Reeve. It was the precursor for the experimental mystery novels but has little regard for the readers of today. The series was notable for its success and made to two sequels, The New Exploits of Elaine and The Romance of Elaine.

The chapters of the serial include The Clutching Hand, The Twilight Sleep, The Vanishing Jewels, The Frozen Safe, The Poisoned Room, The Vampire, The Double Trap, The Hidden Voice, The Death Ray, The Life Current, The Hour of Three, The Blood Crystals, The Devil Worshippers, and The Reckoning.

Arthur Benjamin Reeve was a mystery author born in America. He is most famous for the composition of the serial character Professor Craig Kennedy, often considered as The American Sherlock Holmes and same as Kennedy’s Dr. Watson crony Walter Jameson, a journalist and broadcaster, in 18 mystery detective stories. Most of the author’s popularity is based on his 82 Craig Kennedy mysteries, printed in Cosmopolitan magazine between the years 1910 and 1918. These stories were gathered as a book, with the third set consisting of short tales were compiled into simulated books. The Craig Kennedy mystery stories were published in 1918 and it redistributed the writer’s novels as a similar collection.
