Description
The Efficiency Expert by Edgar Rice Burroughs – A Glimpse at the Urban Jungle of the 20s
The character that catapulted Edgar Rice Burroughs to fame was certainly Tarzan, the wild child raised by monkeys who later becomes a heroic adventurer. However, the creative genius of the writer encompasses much more than the ability to create an almost mythical world: in The Efficiency Expert (written in 1919, published in 1921), he takes the reader to the world of college and through the adventures of a popular athlete, a college sports hero looking for his own way in life.
The main character, Jimmy Torrance, is a young student and athlete who has high hopes of becoming his own man, so he refuses to join his father’s business. He has various jobs and encounters all kinds of people, from every walk of life, giving the reader a colorful insight into what Chicago was at the beginning of the last century. When Jimmy finds a decent job, his previous life starts haunting him, threatening his very existence, even and this is when the novel really becomes exciting.
Called by some a “romantic mystery”, the story of The Efficiency Expert takes several unexpected turns, leaving the reader to think, anticipate and contemplate. It has everything you can expect from the genre – beautiful women, treason, outlaws, villains, crimes, football games and box matches. Unlike in the Tarzan books, the setting is not exotic, but the urban jungle is by no means less exciting or less dangerous.
