Description

One of the lesser-known novels by controversial fantasy, sci-fi and science fiction fantasy writer Marion Zimmer Bradley, The Door through Space takes the reader to the mysterious and complicated world of planet Wolf, a planet seemingly ruled by a government accepted and acknowledged by its inhabitants and dominated by peace. It presents the story of feud that goes on just as much in the heads of the characters as outside their imagination. Published in 1961, the novel is Bradley’s first work, but it is already of a density that allowed her to make some its components full novels later on.

The protagonist of the novel is Race Cargill, an office worker at the time the story starts, but previously one of the best intelligence agents on the planet, well-known for his extraordinary qualities and the fantastic missions he has accomplished that have earned him fame and glory. Cargill was appointed to his office job when the bloody feud between him and his rival came to an end, but the feud starts again as the Door through Space opens. After his sister asks for his help, Cargill goes back to field work and sets off on a road full of dangers and extraordinary adventures to save the world like no one else could.

The novel has every component of a great science fiction story. The focus is on both technology and character, there is space travel and emotional conflict, and the well-rounded, complex universe of Wolf draws the reader like only the best stories can. Though Bradley is best known for her Darkover stories, a series of novels and short stories that create one of the most complex fantasy universes in the history of the genre, The Door through Space was written way before the first Darkover story, but is already showed Bradley’s talent at its best.
