Robert Michael Ballantyne was an accomplished writer and artist whose more than 100 books became well-known in the literary community of his time,and who managed to create some of the most astonishing and inventive stories through his imaginative skills and remarkable ability to tell a tale.

One such story is The Dog Crusoe and His Master-a novel revolving around a faithful dog who played an extremely special role in his master’s campaign of bringing peace between the white man and the native tribes of North America.

Together with two of his friends and his strong and trustworthy dog Crusoe, Dick Varlay roamed the West visiting both friendly and hostile Indian tribes, and doing everything he could to improve relations between them and the “pale faces” while dealing with challenging adventures and perils that not many would have been able to survive. Crusoe actually turned out to play a key role in helping his master achieve his goals, turning out to be the result of Dick’s luckiest day all those years ago, when he won Crusoe as a pup in a Newfoundland shooting contest.

Dick Varlay and Crusoe faced many narrow escapes, hunted buffalo and navigated through the Rocky Mountains together. The party even encountered a tornado and a few dangerous wild animals, including a huge Grizzly bear.

What were all these adventures worth in the end? They pretty much made Dick Varlay and his friends heroes, their legend convincing many to drop their arms and cease hostilities, even during the most volatile of times, as tensions rose between Native Americans and their white rivals.

Unlike most stories from this era,The Dog Crusoe and His Master focuses on presenting the lush beauty and richness of the land and portrays neither the white man, nor the Indian as being 100% evil or untrustworthy.
