Description

The Discovery of New Worlds is the 2nd volume in the series, The Story of the World, which includes the historical time from the ascendancy of Rome to the Conquest of Peru. On its way, going towards the Dark Ages, journeys through the Crusades, and unearthing the mysterious universe with the courageous men who had the bravery to voyage the unfamiliar waters. Particularly is the ruination of Pompeii and the innovation of the Printing Press, as well as several other fascinating occurrences of the past all throughout this time.

“Now is the time to penetrate into the heart of Caledonia and to discover the utmost limits of Britain,” wept the Romans, as they started their exploit to the Highlands of Scotland. While a Roman file searched through the shores and wharves, Agricola took his people upwards Tay to the Highlands, although he cannot trail the unrestrained Caledonians into their craggy and distant massifs. To the north of Scotland, they were not able to pass through, nor did Ireland ever come under Roman authority, in that breeze “the Roman eagle never fluttered.” The Roman chronicle of Britain at this instance is worthy of note. “Britain,” states Tacitus, “the largest of all the islands which have come within the knowledge of the Romans, stretches on the east towards Germany, on the west towards Spain, and on the south it is even within sight of France…. The Roman fleet, at this period first sailing round this remotest coast, gave certain proof that Britain was an island, and at the same time discovered and subdued the Orkney Islands, till then unknown. Thule was also distinctly seen, which winter and eternal snow had hitherto concealed…. The sky in this country is deformed by clouds and frequent rains; but the cold is never extremely rigorous. The earth yields gold and silver and other metals-the ocean produces pearls.”
