The true nature of obedience is unattainable, except from the Divine Cross and the Holy Spirit. We must be resigned before we can be obedient; we must be full of the Holy Spirit before “the fragrance of Christ” can be made plain through us in all situations. The Sermon on the Mount must be stated in the transfiguring light which gleams in reverse from the future events in Jesus’s life.

Although, this is evinced in our thoughts, every phrase of that wonderful sermon shimmers with heavenly brightness, and loops with the sound of the Gospel. In such a spirit let us focus ourselves to the discourse of the “Directory of the Devout Life.”

Frederick Brotherton Meyer, a contemporary and acquaintance of D. L. Moody and A. C. Dixon, was a Baptist minister and preacher in England participating in ministry and central city mission career on every side of the Atlantic. He wrote a number of devotional books and essays, he was depicted in a memorial as The Archbishop of the Free Churches.

F. B. Meyer authored more than 75 books such as Christian life accounts and religious annotations in the Bible. Meyer, also with the seven other pastors, were signatories to the London Manifesto declaring that the Second Coming was about to happen.
