The Curious Republic of Gondour and Other Whimsical Sketches

$19.00

Description

These sketches are a selection of a little of Mark Twain’s very capricious and idiosyncratic crafts. They scuttle the sweep from authoritative remark to our natures’ requirement to be reminisced one way or another. Entranced in its totality the outlines are magical. Entrances singularly, they express the infallibility in so many forms.

It includes: The Curious Republic of Gondour; A Memory; Introductory to “Memoranda”; About Smells; A Couple of Sad Experiences; Dan Murphy; The “Tournament” in A. D. 1870; Curious Relic for Sale; A Reminiscence of the Back Settlements; A Royal Compliment; The Approaching Epidemic; The Tone-Imparting Committee; Our Precious Lunatic; The European Wars — From the Buffalo Express; The Wild Man Interviewed — From the Buffalo Express; and Last Words of Great Men — From the Buffalo Express.

Samuel Langhorne Clemens best known by his pseudonym Mark Twain, was a United States novelist, satirist, tradesman, publisher, and professor. A few of his popular stories are The Adventures of Tom Sawyer in 1876 and its series, the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn in 1885, the second ofttimes known as “The Great American Novel”.

Mark grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, which afterwards gave the context for Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. He became an assistant with a publisher and later employed as a typesetter, writing columns to the periodical of his elder brother Orion Clemens. He then became a riverboat navigator on the Mississippi River prior to going west to enlist at Orion in Nevada. He ascribed comically to his shortfall of popularity at mining, switching careers to newspaper writing for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise. His funny tale, The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, was issued in 1865, founded on a fiction that he perceived at Angels Hotel in Angels Camp, California where he had expended certain years as a mine worker. The short tale got worldwide interest and was even interpreted into French.
