She was born in Boston, Massachusetts, some of her relatives are also inclined to writing like her sister Ethel who was an author and illustrator under the pseudonym Ann Underhill. The author spent her whole life living in New England with her family for many generations in their Beacon hill residence.

She was well educated and was very intelligent excelling as class valedictorian at Bowdoin School. She also enrolled in the Girls’ Latin School and got friends with Josephine Preston Peabody, an American poet and playwright. She led the newly organized school magazine, named The Jabberwock after the poem by Lewis Carroll with her permission. After she finished her high school, she got into Radcliffe College and successfully graduated.

She was dedicated into writing and wrote poems and books such as In the Days of Giants: A Book of Norse Tales; The Flower Princess; The Christmas Angel; The Book of Saints and Friendly Beasts; John of the Woods; Kisington Town; The Ten Blowers; and other enticing books which were not mentioned.
