Description
This appendix to the 1580 edition of the Book of Concord is a collection of Scripture clauses along with excerpts from the fathers of the primordial Christian Church. They are aimed to express that the Christology of the Formula of Concord varies neither in essence nor in lexicon from Christian Orthodoxy. Jakob Andreae was a distinguished German Lutheran theologian, participated in the writings of important articles. He was born in Waiblingen, in the Duchy of Württemberg. He attended the University of Tübingen from 1541. He went to the diets of Regensburg and Augsburg, became an instructor of theology in the University of Tübingen, and the church leader of St. George. He was an active member in Protestant deliberations and associations, especially in the implementation of a common declaration of commitment between the two parties. In 1573, he organized with the aid of Martin Crusiusa, a conformity with Patriarch Jeremias II of Constantinople, to make connexion in part of the Lutheran Church with the Orthodox Church. He was a party of the 1577 Formula of Concord, and editor with Martin Chemnitz of the 1580 Book of Concord. In his later years, he went to Bohemia and Germany, effecting for the solidification of the Reformation, conversing with pastors, magistrates, and princes. He was the writer of over 150 writings, almost all controversial and exuberantly created, for the much part pointed in contrary to Calvinism. His main goal was to reunify the disputing groups of Protestants under the flag of Lutheran orthodoxy. “The purpose of the restoration of unity, according to Andreae, was not just to affirm God’s will that the church be one, but also to confound the adversaries of the truth outside and inside the Lutheran camp.” He commenced his struggles by being kind with those who disagree with him on the principles.
