Harrington Strong is one of the pseudonyms of a popular author known as Johnson McCulley – most well-known for creating the character of Zorro, but also for Black Star, The Avenging Twins and The Crimson Clown, all featuring McCulley’s pulp characters.

The story’s plot begins with Mr. Sydney Prale, who returns from Honduras after an extremely successful business venture that has his net worth skyrocket to over $1 million. However, instead of being happy to see him, his friends in the United States welcome Prale with a cold, and even hostile atmosphere. Once he is charged with murder, he decides to hire a detective, and while Jim Farley is not necessarily a common detective you’d see in a mystery story, he manages to reveal a few startling secrets that make for a truly exciting crime novel.

Instead of the usual suspects and events, The Brand of Silence introduces us to conspiracy theories and strong corporate leaders who would do just about anything to bring the main character to his knees. Set on the busy, eventful city streets of Manhattan, ambushes and even kidnappings are always a danger to keep in sight, and you never really find out what’s going on until the very end.
