Description

Book of the Marvels of the World in French: Livre des Merveilles du Monde or Description of the World or Devisement du Monde, in Italian Il Milione or The Million or Oriente Poliano and in English generally referred to as The Travels of Marco Polo, is a 13th century travel piece documented by Rustichello da Pisa from narratives declared by Marco Polo, illustrating Polo’s expeditions to Asia from 1271 to 1295, and his encounters at the Kublai Khan court.

The volumes were transcribed in Old French by romance scriber Rustichello da Pisa, who wrote from chronicles which he had perceived from Marco Polo when they were both jailed in Genoa. At the start, there has been skepticism upon Polo’s rare fantastic tales, on top of a scholastic argument in the later years. A few have asked whether Marco had really journeyed to China or was only retelling tales that he had perceived from other trekkers.

Mark Elvin, an Economic historian finishes off that the latest writing “demonstrates by specific example the ultimately overwhelming probability of the broad authenticity” of Polo’s narrative, and that the volume is, “in essence, authentic, and, when used with care, in broad terms to be trusted as a serious though obviously not always final, witness.”

Rustichello da Pisa, also called as Rusticiano, was an Italian romance scriber. He is mostly known for collaborating with Marco Polo’s life account, The Travels of Marco Polo, while they were imprisoned together in Genoa. At an early period, he indited the Roman de Roi Artus or Romance of King Arthur, also referred as the Compilation, the prime renowned Arthurian romance by an Italian writer.
