Catherine Cate Coblentz was an American author, well known for her children’s story books. She was born in Hardwick, Vermont. She worked at the outbreak of the First World War at the National Bureau of Standards in Washington, D.C., there she met William Coblentz, who was an American scientist and a forerunner in the field of infrared spectroscopy. They got married and had two children, both were girls, sadly, the other baby did not live longer.

Catherine Cate made a poem entitled Mars in a magazine, Popular Astronomy, just as her partner was measuring the temperature of planet Mars at the Lowell Observatory. She began writing children’s stories and was popular for her book, The Blue Cat of Castle Town, it won the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award and was a Newberry Honor book. Timeworn replicas of this and her other books are still existing and many of them are believed to be collector’s items.

Mrs. Coblentz graduated with a B.A. degree from George Washington University. To honor her work, The Blue Cat of Castle Town, she received a recognition of a Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award by her alma mater.

In the later part of her life, Catherine Cate was generous in helping grow funds to buy the land on which the Cleveland Park Neighborhood Library was constructed in Connecticut Avenue in Washington, D.C. A series of windows, with visuals from her books, continued to be put on view in the library.

Catherine Cate Coblentz, her husband, and her daughter are buried in Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington, D.C.
