The Betrothed (I Promessi Sposi) is an Italian historical novel written by the renowned author, Alessandro Manzoni. The story deals with various subjects, from the gutless, hypocritical nature of one priest, Don Abbondio and the noble martyrdom of other priests like Padre Cristoforo and Federico Borromeo, to the enduring relationship between Renzo and Lucia, and their hardships to finding each other and finally be married. I Promessi Sposi was made into an opera by Amilcare Ponchielli and Errico Petrella in different dates. It was also made into films and television programs.

Alessandro Francesco Tommaso Manzoni was an Italian poet, novelist, and playwright. He is renowned for his work The Betrothed originally in Italian: I Promessi Sposi in the year 1827 and also his other work, Adelchi in 1822. He wrote in the category of historical fiction, tragedy, and poetry. The novel I Promessi Sposi was ranked as one of the masterpieces of world literature. It is also a symbol of the Italian Risorgimento, for the novel’s patriotic message and for the reason that it was an important turning point in the advancement of the modern, unified Italian language.

Alessandro Manzoni was born in Milan, Italy to Pietro Manzoni and Giulia Beccaria. His father Pietro belonged to an old family of Lecco, were once feudal lords of Barzio, in the Valsassina. The writer’s maternal grandfather, Cesare Beccaria, was a famous author and philosopher, and his mother Giulia also had literary skills. His parents got separated and his mother started a new relationship with the intellectual Carlo Imbonati, they moved to England and then to Paris. Because of this, their son went to many religious institutions.

He was a learning disability, and at some different schools he attended he was considered a dunce.
