Engaging in Self-Introspection with The Bee-Man of Orn and Other Fanciful Tales

Unlike most novels that hold deep philosophical truths, and are meant to help us find out who we truly are by engaging in self-introspection, The Bee-Man of Orn is a tale written by Frank R. Stockton mainly for children. Nevertheless, the fairy tale includes some truly entangled and somewhat mystifying connotations that adults are usually better at interpreting.

The story talks about the land of Orn where lived a man named the Bee-Man – since he lives among bees, and survives on honey and the occasional piece of meat – who was once visited by a young sorcerer. The sorcerer tells him that he needs to go on a quest to find out about his true self, since during his life he had changed completely, and he needs to examine himself closely, and find out what he has transformed into.

Only then would the young sorcerer be able to use his power to turn the Bee-Man back into his true self, and make everything right once more. So the Bee-Man heads out on his quest to self-discovery, and soon finds himself not only able to see his true self, but also capable of feats that he never thought possible.

This is a remarkably inspiring story that children can learn a lot from. The Bee-Man can essentially take on any symbolic form, being applied to psychological and emotional blockages or even philosophical, existential questions that adults would seek an answer to themselves.

The book also comes with some beautiful illustrations that kids and adults tend to love just as well. The earth hues and the expressive drawings will help your children become more familiar with the Bee-Man and his sorcerers, while Stockton’s engaging writing and insightful depiction of the main character and the entire storyline will keep both you and your kids entirely immersed in this beautiful tale of true self-discovery.
