Description

The Basket of Flowers is a story of James and his daughter Mary. James is the landscape gardener of the king and he sincerely relishes tending for and planting flowers. He coaches his daughter Mary several values and moralities of being righteous through the plants and flowers. There came a time when, unexpectedly, Mary is wrongly suspected of theft, and she was penalized with death. Even though Mary encountered a lot of difficulties and sufferings, she comes to know God from what her father taught her, in God’s untimely love and forbearance, the dedication of praying for her adversaries, in thinking through her hurdles as an exultation, and genuine reconciliation.

Christoph von Schmid was born on August 15, 1768 in Dinkelsbühl, Bavaria and died on September 3, 1854 in Augsburg. He wrote children’s stories and was a teacher. Many of his books are well recognized and interpreted into distinctivet vernaculars. His most famous story in the English-speaking countries is The Basket of Flowers or Das Blumenkörbchen.

Christoph took up theology and was later ordained as priest. Thereafter, he served as assistant in many parishes until 1796, when he was positioned at the head of an enormous school in Thannhausen, where he taught for several years. From 1816 to 1826, he became the parish priest at Oberstadion in Württemberg. In 1826, Christoph was designated as a canon of the Augsburg Cathedral, where he died due to cholera at the age of 87.

He wrote books for children, teaching Christian principles, soon after his appointment at the school in Thannhausen. His first book was a Bible history for children in 1801. His real reason for writing was to recompense his pupils after school by reading aloud his Godly books to them. He dedicated most of his life through writing stories mainly about the virtues of Christianity.
