The story of The Barbadoes Girl is addressed to all children and adults, that every trials and challenges that comes, you must be always hopeful for greater solutions to transpire.

Barbara Hofland was a British author of educational, ethical stories for children as well as school texts and poetry.

She was born Barbara Wreaks or Wreakes, Robert Wreakes, her father, was a Sheffield manufacturer, but he died when she was still three years old, she was taken cared by her maiden aunt. She wrote for the local prints and began a milliner’s shop, but she sold it when she got married to Thomas Bradshawe Hoole, an entrepreneur, but he died after two years and left her with a son.

She resided with her husband’s mother in Attercliffe, and supported her needs partially from helpful subscriptions given for a book of her poetry. Thereafter, she built a girl’s boarding school at Grove House, Harrogate and established it as a ladies’ finishing school, a precursor to the current Harrogate College.

Barbara Wreaks married the landscaper Thomas Christopher Hofland. Though her second husband had a good bearing in landscaping and even had an exhibit at the Royal Academy, Barbara still finances their needs through her works.

Her son Frederic, an Anglican clergyman, died before her in 1832, as well as her husband in 1843. She died on November 4, 1844 and was buried at Richmond, Surrey. Her life was written by Thomas Ramsay and was printed in 1849.
